History students:
Remember the lessons you learned from dance last week? Try to work more to make your frames subtle (they wear black) and your pictures, your writing, bolder through better use of nouns and verbs. We're writing essays, but they don't need to be dull.
I'll be bringing some essays for your reading pleasure this week to class (early Oct). Watch how this gentleman writes his essays.
Most of you have all the tools in terms of understanding the mechanics and the framework to an essay. Now you can start more and more to shine in your writing. It will take some hard work for some of you, but it will make a huge difference in how your essays read and the personal satisfaction you can take from a job well done.

WORLD HISTORY AND LITERATURE: GREEKS III
1. Be able to locate Macedonia on a map.
2. Identify the following:
Philip II Alexander the Great Pytheas
Praxiteles Euclid Diogenes Ptolemy I
Epicurus Archimedes diadochoi
3. Why did Alexander’s empire fail to hold together after his death? What lessons might we learn from that failure?
4. The gifts of the Greeks--passed first to the Romans, then through the Christian Church in the Middle Ages and Renaissance--continue to reverberate in our culture today. Pretend that you are to give a 300 word address to your local Kiwanis Club on our Greek heritage. Write out that address and be prepared to deliver it in class. Think of everything we've discussed so far: the Greek interest in military tactics, government, art, and philosophy.

History students:

I'm reading your Plato essays and decided to take a break to remind you about some points in essay writing. If you are a younger student or someone new to me this year, let me encourage you to write an outline before you begin your essay. Many of the essays I've examined so far followed the multiple questions asked in the book rather than an essay format. Remember that when you write an essay you will do best if:
1. You write an outline;
2. You make strong topic sentences. You make these sentences strong by writing what you intend to discuss in that paragraph. Make your verbs and nouns do the work.
3. Use specific evidence to back your arguments. In this case, you would draw the evidence from Plato or from your experience, depending on which question you answered. But it must be evidence supporting your argument, not loose opinions.
4. Focus on making a conclusion that 1)briefly summarizes your arguments and 2)gives the reader some point to ponder, however minor.
